This, too, is life in Hawaii. My neighbor built a bed-and-breakfast on the end of a private dead-end street by misleading people as to the true purpose of a new construction project. Today that neighbor had a wedding on his property. There is little room to park, so he parked vehicles in the only ungated section of another neighbor's [presently unattended] property. So he built his B&B by not telling anyone what he was doing, he did the same for the wedding and the same for the parking. All because he could get away with it.

If you want to know why this business project is so important, and only possible with blessing and participation and love from the native people around me, it is because this kind of behavior is all over the island, all over Hawaii. Where is the respect for the land, for the people around, for simply what is right and pono? (see the BeHawaiian.com website for an explanation if you don't know this word) In no way does this reflect directly on the marriage party, who are certainly unaware of the background and for whom we wish only the best, but all of the people here--and those born here as well--must learn to respect and not just use this place. As residents we do not have to sacrifice standards of behavior to provide excellent sustenance for ourselves and our community. And as a company we are always prepared to demonstrate this no matter how closely we are examined.
